Today Marvel has dropped a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, featuring no other than the original cast of the X-Men. It has been known for quite some time that the production company has amassed as much star talent as it possibly can for this film. Hopes are (by the company and fans alike) that this new installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will revive its credibility as a powerhouse, and not as wavering production studio battling against superhero fatigue.
However, this new teaser brings forth something more precious than the previous ones that Marvel Studios has released (one for Captain America and another for Thor). It brings nostalgia. And who better than to give it, than the cast who kickstarted the superhero genre as we know it today?
The teaser starts with the X-Mansion, abandoned, lifeless and destroyed. Searchlights from the outside peer into the windows of the Xavier Institute, with Professor X (Patrick Stewart) watching lingering in the shadows, watching from afar. All the while Magneto (Ian Mackellen) gives another one of his memorable speeches: “Death comes for us all. It’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t are you prepared to die. The question is: who would you be when you close your eyes?” In another shot, both friends sit near a chess table, where most of their important discussions take place. A black king chess piece levitates and Magneto takes the Professor’s hands into his own. We see both men sharing a smile, Professor X in uniform, Magneto with long hair and a beard. A moment of peace it seems, although brief, since short after Cyclops (James Marsden) is kneeling on the ground, in front of the destroyed mansion. He takes off his visor and lets out a primal scream. He opens his eyes and engulfs the world with his red optic blasts. He wears his comic accurate 90’s uniform. But (blink and you miss it), there are something more afoot – pun intended – as Sentinels stomp on the destroyed Xavier Institute.
The teaser ends with one sentence that creates much anticipation: “The X-Men Will Return In Avengers: Doomsday”. Although we have already been introduced to the X-Men in the MCU with Deadpool & Wolverine, this truly starts to feel like a homecoming. For those who did not know, Fox Studios had the rights to both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, until March 2019, when Disney acquired the company for $71.3 billion. Now for the first time fans will see both of their favorite teams in the same movie, interacting with one another. The only question that remains is: Can Marvel finally do justice for the X-Men and show their full potential with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?
All will be revealed in due time. The countdown has started.
Avengers: Doomsday comes out in December 18 2026.
